Kind Leaders' Words & Actions Help People Grow!

Quick question for you: How did the last interaction with your leader make you feel?

Did it make you feel motivated and excited to come to work, to try something new that you might have been worried about trying…to stretch yourself to learn and grow to contribute more?

Or…did it make you feel “less than” or small…and that you and your contributions weren’t appreciated or valued?

If the last interaction with your leader made you feel “shut down”, demeaned or demoralized then you were probably the victim of unkind leadership. That’s because the words and actions of unkind leaders cause fear. Fear of ridicule, fear of punishment, fear of even losing your job. And fear keeps people stuck in the same place and shuts down their ability to contribute, learn and grow.

So often, people who feel stuck and demoralized blame themselves. They think that if they were different, they wouldn’t be treated or spoken to that way.

Leaders, please remember, every single person deserves to be treated and spoken to kindly and with respect, and that when they are, they will learn and grow and blossom. So, if your people aren’t growing as you think they should, please reflect on your own words and actions and make the changes in yourself you need to.

And if you answered that the last interaction with your leader made you feel demeaned or demoralized, please remember, you don’t have to stay where you are. You can choose to move and find a better, kinder leader!
