You are FABULOUS! And I really mean it!

“You’re FABULOUS!” When I was flying regularly, before the pandemic, I’d go through TSA checkpoints twice a week at minimum. I often struck up a conversation with the person checking my information. When they asked how I was doing, I’d respond enthusiastically with my customary “I’m FABULOUS! How are you?” The normally serous security people would inevitably break into a big smile and say, “Oh my goodness! I wish I was FABULOUS too!” And I always responded the same way. By saying “You are. You are totally FABULOUS! All you need to do is say it!”

So, today, my reflection, two days before my 60th birthday is that YOU ARE FABULOUS! Yes, you are! And I’m writing it in capital letters, because I’m shouting it! You are a unique individual, with a unique purpose, unique strengths, background and experience and you have a unique and FABULOUS role to play and job to do in this world. Whether it’s checking passports at security, planting gardens and caring for landscaping, or helping businesses serve more customers, and whether you come from a humble upbringing and overcome a lot, or whether you grew up in a privileged circumstance, who you are is FABULOUS. And I (and others) can tell you that…but you need to tell yourself as well! You are exactly who you are supposed to be, and who you are, and the contribution you are supposed to make, is enough!

And, if you are a leader, you need to tell your team members how FABULOUS they are, as well. Not just as workers, for the things they do for your customers and your organization, but as people. As human beings with hopes, dreams, families, friends, strengths and weaknesses and things they are working on to fulfill their personal purpose. If you aren't sure what those things are, or why each of your team members is FABULOUS, then it's a clue for you to find out!

So today, please do me a favor. Whoever you are. When someone asks how you are, please smile, look them in the eye, and say, “I’m FABULOUS! How about you?” Because you are, and they are too!!

(And thank you to whoever sent me this totally FABULOUS tiara and sash as a present! It arrived without a card! A FABULOUS surprise!)
